Training Expectations and Tips

Students should have a clear understanding of what is expected when involved in the training program.  The following information will be helpful.

  • Training Time

Both aircraft and instructor time is counted and recorded in tenths of an hour with minutes rounded to the nearest tenth.

Aircraft.  The Dacon (Hobbs) meter counts time in hours and tenths, and is used to log aircraft time.  When recording time out/in, it is proper to count the highest tenth when the meter is advancing between tenths.

Instructor. The dual flight or ground training session begins with the start of the preflight briefing/ground discussion, or if the Instructor is supervising/assis-ting the aircraft preflight inspection. [TIP:  When authorized to do so, it is advantageous for the student to complete aircraft pre-flight inspections prior to the start of the session.]  The training session ends when the Instructor finishes the post-flight debrief/ground discussion and (if appropriate) completes the logbook entry.  Time with the Instructor is valuable.  To ensure the most value for that time, the student is responsible for limiting cell phone calls, visitors, and other distractions.    NOTE TO AIRCRAFT OWNERS:  If training is to be conducted in your aircraft, it is assumed that the aircraft has been serviced and ready to go when the training session starts.  Delays due to refueling or maintenance that could have been discovered and addressed prior to the start of a training session will count toward Instructor time.

  • Dual Session

To obtain the most value from a training session the student should come prepared, intellectually, mentally, and physically.  The student should study for the session and have a list of questions that need to be answered.  We all have things that serve as mental distractions.  The student should resist bringing those distractions to the session and mentally focus on the task at hand.  [TIP:  It has been proven that mentally visualizing the correct way to perform tasks before a session increases performance.]  Last, but not least, try to come physically prepared for the session.  Illnesses, fatigue, etc., detract from the student’s ability to focus and perform.  If you are not well enough to make the most out of your training session, then consider rescheduling.

  • No Show/Late Show

Students must make every effort to notify WWAS as soon as possible if they are unable to make it to a scheduled training session (dual, or solo in WWAS aircraft).

    Appropirate notification methods:

Less than 24-hours.  Notification must be by phone call, text message, or personal contact.

More than 24-hours:  Email cancellation/changes are acceptable.

Appointment No-Shows:  A 'no-show' is when a student or renter pilot does not provide timely notification that he/she will not be able to appear on time for a scheduled appointment.

It will be considered a ‘no show’ in the following situations:

Prosser Airport. Student does not notify WWAS at least 15-minutes before the scheduled session.

Other Airports.  Student does not notify WWAS at least the amount of surface travel time (as determined by Google Maps) from the Prosser Airport to the airport where the session is to be conducted.

Late shows.  Late shows without notification will be considered a ‘no show’ 15-minutes past the scheduled session start time.

A No Show fee equal to 1-hour of aircraft time and instructor time (if applicable) will be charged unless it is shown the 'no show' was due to an emergency situation that prevented timely notification.

  • Solo Sessions

All solo flights shall be conducted in accordance with all applicable rules, regulations, procedures, and instructor mandated limitations.  In addition:

Airport operations in WWAS aircraft shall be limited to paved surface runways only.

Student Pilots and Sport Pilots training for Recreational or Private Pilot ratings, shall obtain instructor approval for all solo flights (including flights in owner aircraft), and provide notification of beginning and ending of flight.

Any maintenance issues (including suspected damage caused by hard landings, etc.) shall be reported to WWMA immediately after the conclusion of the flight.

Students are liable for accident damage and medical claims not covered by WWAS insurance.

  • Payment for services and materials

Payment is due when services are rendered and materials are delivered.  Students are encouraged to maintain a positive account balance to draw against for training and materials.
